Fe 500 vs. Fe 550: which grade fits your project?

Feb 12, 2026 · Dwaraka Editorial

Choosing between Fe 500 and Fe 550 TMT bar comes down to one question: how much does steel weight actually cost you on this project? Both grades meet IS 1786:2008, but the higher yield strength of Fe 550 means less steel is needed to hit the same design strength.

For a typical 1,000 MT design-strength requirement, Fe 500 needs roughly 0.854 MT of steel where Fe 415 needs the full 1.000 MT — a 14.6% saving. Fe 550, at Dwaraka's tested numbers, needs only 0.809 MT — a 19.15% saving over the same baseline.

On a mid-sized residential project, that difference in steel weight can offset a higher per-kg rate entirely. The right way to compare isn't price-per-bar — it's total steel cost for the same structural outcome.

Fe 550 does ask more of your welding practice: lower carbon content helps, but site teams used to Fe 415 should confirm electrode selection and joint prep before switching grades mid-project.
